La Boîte à Musique closes Brussels physical store after 50 years

La Boîte à Musique, a long-standing music retailer in Brussels, is closing its physical storefront on the Kunstberg after 50 years of operation. The decision follows a significant shift in consumer behavior driven by the rise of digital streaming and online platforms, which has reduced the demand for physical CDs and vinyl records.

Manager Bertrand de Wouters d’Oplinter stated that the move allows the company to enter a “new phase” by focusing entirely on its growing online activities. While the physical location—once a cultural hub for classical and jazz enthusiasts—will close, the business will continue to operate through its webshop. The company aims to maintain its specialized catalog of over 100,000 references, including rare editions for collectors, and will provide expert advice via telephone rather than in-person consultations.
