La Campagnola suspends 60 workers in Mar del Plata

La Campagnola, a company belonging to Grupo Arcor, has reached an agreement with the Fish Industry Workers Union (SOIP) to temporarily suspend 60 employees at its fish canning plant in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The suspension is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 28.

During this period, workers will receive non-remunerative allowances under the framework of Article 223 bis of the Labor Contract Law. Negotiations are ongoing between union representatives and company executives regarding the specific salary percentage to be paid during the inactivity.

The production halt is driven by a combination of raw material shortages, excess product stock, and a sustained decline in sales. Specifically, mackerel landings have dropped by nearly 90% compared to the previous season. To compensate, the company attempted to process frozen tuna loins imported from Ecuador, but this resulted in high inventory levels due to a lack of commercial demand.

Local logistical complications have further impacted operations, including the redirection of the vessel Floridablanca from mackerel to hubbsi hake fishing. Additionally, the facility is unable to process anchovies from Rawson or Buenos Aires province, preventing the substitution of missing raw materials with other marine species.
