La Chaux-de-Fonds apartment fire leads to building evacuation

An apartment fire broke out in a multi-family residential building at Rue Jaquet-Droz 12 in La Chaux-de-Fonds during the early hours of Saturday, October 17, 2026. The alarm was raised shortly after 3:00 AM by a passerby who noticed flames escaping from a window.

Emergency responders, including 14 firefighters from the Service d’Incendie et de Secours des Montagnes neuchâteloises (SISMN), managed to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other units. Approximately 40 residents were evacuated and waited outdoors while crews ventilated the building.

The resident of the affected apartment attempted to extinguish the fire personally before fleeing due to smoke and alerting neighbors. No injuries were reported, though one person was examined by medical services as a precaution. The apartment has been sealed for investigation, and the tenant is being relocated. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
