LA City Controller subpoenas LA28 over Olympic financial records

Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia has issued a subpoena to the LA28 organizing committee, demanding the disclosure of financial records, contracts, and budgets related to venue construction for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The subpoena follows allegations that LA28 failed to comply with the Games Agreement, which requires the committee to provide details on any contract exceeding $1 million, including the name, type, amount, term, and purpose. Mejia’s office stated that a review of existing documents showed requested information was either incomplete or entirely missing. Specifically, the committee has failed to provide bank statements, financial forecasts versus actuals, and specific schedules and budgets for venues.

Because the City of Los Angeles serves as the financial backstop for the Games, the controller’s office is seeking to assess the city’s potential financial exposure regarding cost overruns. Mejia has given LA28 a 15-day deadline to respond to the subpoena.
