La Coronada residents protest against biomethane plant and landfill

The activist group ‘La Plataforma Salvemos La Coronada’ has organized a new protest scheduled for this coming Saturday at Cruce de Fajardo in Villanueva de la Serena. The mobilization aims to oppose a proposed biomethane plant in the area and demand the closure of the ‘macrovertedero’ located in Los Baldíos.

Residents argue that the municipality has endured the consequences of the Villanueva landfill for over three decades and fear that a new waste management facility will worsen the situation. The group has previously sought dialogue with the Mayor of La Coronada, Josefa Blázquez Rodríguez, but deemed the institutional responses insufficient.

In July, representatives also presented their grievances to the Assembly of Extremadura. The collective is calling for impact studies regarding health and aquifers, increased transparency, and better citizen participation in monitoring such installations. They advocate for smaller-scale plants located closer to waste generation sites.
