La Cuaba protest turns fatal over proposed recycling plant

A community protest in La Cuaba, Pedro Brand, against a proposed recycling and solid waste valorization plant has resulted in one death and one injury. Video footage shows an individual in a white jeep firing at close range toward demonstrators.

The incident occurred during a gathering to mark 100 days of a community camp established to oppose the project led by the Dominican company OakHouse. The company plans to build the facility on approximately 986,000 square meters in the Aguacate area.

Local residents and the La Cuaba Development Board, led by spokesperson Fabio Correa, have expressed significant concerns regarding the environmental impact. They argue the project threatens a subtropical humid forest area that contains several springs, streams, and aquifers essential for local agriculture and ecotourism.
