La Familia–Frigomez slaughterhouse charged with polluting Acaray River
The Paraguayan Public Ministry has filed charges against the responsible party of the La Familia–Frigomez slaughterhouse for alleged environmental crimes. The investigation follows reports of unknown substances appearing in the Acaray River near Ciudad del Este.
During a raid on the facility, prosecutors discovered that the establishment's anaerobic stabilization lagoons lacked the geomembrane waterproofing required by its approved environmental plan. Investigators also observed the open runoff of liquids containing blood, grease, and manure from plant cleaning processes. Additionally, an old drainage channel was found to have a direct outlet to the banks of the Acaray River.
Prosecutor Zunilda Ocampos Marín, from the Specialized Unit for Environmental Crimes of Alto Paraná, has requested that the case proceed to oral and public trial. The evidence submitted includes technical reports, sample analyses, and documentation from various institutions, including MADES, INTN, and Itaipú Binacional.
