La France insoumise challenges pesticide exemptions in French law

The political group La France insoumise (LFI) has announced plans to challenge the recently promulgated agricultural emergency law in the French National Assembly. On October 29, the group intends to use its parliamentary niche to propose the repeal of provisions that allow for exemptions regarding the use of certain pesticides, specifically acetamiprid and flupyradifurone.

Critics of the law, including LFI members, have labeled the legislation a “loi poison” (poison law) and a “loi criminelle” (criminal law). They argue that the law permits the return of neonicotinoids that pose significant risks to human health—specifically neurological and reproductive development in children—and threaten pollinator populations by damaging the health and reproductive cycles of bees.

The controversy centers on the ability of specific sectors, such as sugar beet and hazelnut production, to use these substances under regulated conditions. Opponents also claim the law weakens the authority of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) by requiring it to expedite reauthorizations and collaborate closely with the chemical industry.
