La Gomera and Gibraltar highlight key economic sectors

In La Gomera, the tourism sector is being highlighted for its significant impact on the local economy. According to President Casimiro Curbelo, accommodation activities generate approximately 39 million euros in revenue and are closely linked to over 3,000 jobs. The industry also supports secondary sectors including gastronomy, commerce, transport, and local crafts.

Meanwhile, Gibraltar’s online gambling industry is facing economic uncertainty due to increased tax pressure from the United Kingdom. UK taxes on remote casino games rose from 21% to 40% in April, with online betting taxes expected to increase from 15% to 25% by 2027. This sector accounts for roughly 30% of Gibraltar’s GDP and one-third of its tax revenue. Despite job cuts at companies like Lottoland, Entain, and bet365, Gibraltar’s Gaming Commissioner Andrew Lyman maintains that the jurisdiction remains competitive and is exploring growth in prediction markets.
