La Gomera officials call for educational equality measures

Casimiro Curbelo, spokesperson for the Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG), has called for reinforced public policies to ensure equal opportunities for residents of non-capital islands in the Canary Islands.

Curbelo highlighted that structural inequalities persist due to the administrative and economic concentration in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. He argued that true equality requires differentiated measures to compensate for the geographic disadvantages faced by residents in islands like La Gomera, where double or triple insularity increases costs for travel, housing, and maintenance for students.

To address these challenges, the Cabildo of La Gomera has allocated a significant portion of its budget to scholarships, including new rental assistance to combat rising prices. Curbelo emphasized that local efforts must be supported by other public administrations to ensure that living in a less central territory does not become a barrier to higher education or professional training.
