La Gomera–Tenerife Electricity Interconnection Begins Operation

The single electricity system linking La Gomera and Tenerife entered service, ending La Gomera’s previous isolation. The project, valued at over €145 million, includes a 36‑km submarine cable and a double 66 kV AC circuit capable of transporting 50 MW—more than the island’s maximum demand.

The connection links the Chío substation on Tenerife with the El Palmar substation on La Gomera, allowing both islands to operate as a unified grid. It enhances supply security, supports greater integration of renewable generation, and provides a backup source for essential services. The installation, financed and built by Endesa with support from Redeia, the Spanish and Canary governments, also featured a new substation at El Palmar costing over €8 million.

Local officials highlighted the interconnection as a “historical milestone” for energy stability and sustainable development in the archipelago, and called for further upgrades such as closing the Valle Gran Rey island loop to complete the distribution network’s robustness.
