La Graciosa suffers major power outage during peak August tourism

A major electrical failure caused a widespread power outage on the island of La Graciosa on Sunday, August 16. The outage began at 5:30 hours due to a fault in a medium-voltage overhead line located in a difficult-to-access area. The disruption affected a total of 6,106 customers across both La Graciosa and Lanzarote.

Repair efforts were significantly delayed by logistical challenges. Technical teams and equipment had to be transported by boat from Lanzarote to La Graciosa, and a second boat was required to reach the remote site of the fault. While repairs began at 11:35 hours, the supply was not fully restored until 15:38 hours.

The outage occurred during the peak August tourist season, causing significant economic damage to the local service and hospitality sectors. Business owners reported lost revenue as restaurants and hotels were unable to operate, highlighting the vulnerability of the island's infrastructure and the economic impact of service interruptions on the tourism-dependent economy.
