La Guaira faces urgent reconstruction needs after devastating earthquakes

Eighty-five days after devastating earthquakes on June 24, the state of La Guaira faces a critical reconstruction crisis. Official figures report 6,509 deaths and 29,000 missing persons, with 190 buildings collapsed and over 800 suffering structural damage. Experts estimate that replacing housing in the region could cost $2.37 billion, while a joint study by the UN, EU, and World Bank estimates total damages across seven affected states at approximately $14.83 billion.

In response to the economic fallout, business groups and the National Institute of Socialist Training and Education (INCES) have launched ‘Plan Fortaleza: La Guaira, Vida y Producción’. This initiative focuses on technical training in sectors such as tourism, gastronomy, and logistics to support long-term productive recovery. Simultaneously, the La Guaira Chamber of Commerce is calling for tax relief and access to soft credits to help merchants recover their businesses, citing the need for measures similar to those implemented after the 1999 disaster.

The humanitarian impact remains severe as displaced families struggle with housing instability. Many families who fled to Barquisimeto are facing uncertainty regarding their children's education, as the lack of permanent housing prevents them from enrolling students in new schools or returning to rehabilitated facilities in La Guaira.
