La Guaira faces economic crisis following Venezuelan earthquakes

Two months after the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela, which resulted in 6,500 deaths and left over 17,900 people homeless, the state of La Guaira is facing a severe economic crisis. The local Chamber of Commerce reports an 80% drop in sector income following the disaster.

Tourism, the region's primary source of revenue, has been paralyzed due to debris removal and restrictions on beach use. Governor José Alejandro Terán has restricted access to coastal areas, citing safety concerns in devastated zones like Macuto where buildings have collapsed or been demolished.

In response to the loss of traditional livelihoods, some residents are attempting to restart small businesses within shelters or near damaged homes. While tourism remains stagnant, minor activities such as fishing and small-scale entrepreneurship are beginning to emerge as survivors seek ways to regain stability.
