La Guaira continues recovery following devastating earthquakes

More than a month after devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on June 24, recovery efforts continue across the La Guaira state. Official reports indicate at least 6,301 deaths and 73,356 injuries.

In La Guaira, Governor José Alejandro Terán has maintained restrictions on beach access, particularly in heavily impacted areas like Macuto and Caraballeda, citing safety concerns. While the Ministry of Tourism is evaluating plans to reactivate economic activity in less affected areas like Chuspa, the governor suggests a cautious approach similar to pandemic-era management, focusing on beach improvement projects for local workers.

Infrastructure and sanitation efforts are underway through the ‘Plan Despeje Digno y Seguro’. Vice President Juan Ramírez reported that over 497,000 tons of debris—approximately 23% of the total projected amount—have been removed using heavy machinery. Additionally, the Panteón Nacional in Caracas is undergoing rehabilitation under the ‘Plan Venezuela Renace’ to repair damage caused by the seismic activity.

Local livelihoods remain strained. Fishermen and merchants in the coastal region are struggling to regain stability, with some returning to sea after receiving fuel assistance. Meanwhile, humanitarian and social efforts include the opening of a Misión Nevado shelter in La Guaira to care for rescued animals.
