La Guaira police commissioner accused of killing former partner

Elías Fariñas, a 42-year-old commissioner of the La Guaira State Police, is accused of murdering his former partner, 34-year-old Johana Naranjo Yedra, in the Quebrada Seca sector of Caraballeda.

The attack occurred on the night of Thursday, August 6. Naranjo Yedra was shot twice—once in the head and once in the abdomen—while staying temporarily at a relative's home. Her family reported a history of continuous physical and psychological abuse, noting that she had recently separated from Fariñas to escape the violence. The victim was also reportedly grieving the loss of her brother and nephew in recent earthquakes.

Following the shooting, Fariñas traveled to the East Coordination Center of the police institution to surrender himself to his superiors. He is currently in custody as authorities conduct investigations into the femicide. The incident has left a seven-year-old child orphaned.
