Maiquetía Airport Resumes Cargo Operations and Prepares Temporary Terminals after June Earthquakes
On 5 August 2026 the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, Venezuela, received its first post‑earthquake cargo flight from Panama, marking the first phase of the airport’s recovery after the 24 June double‑magnitude earthquakes. The Ministry of Transport, led by Minister Francisco Garcés, confirmed the arrival and said the cargo service will expand, noting a second cargo flight from Bogotá that brought more than 13 tonnes of goods. The cargo restart is part of a progressive restoration plan that also includes the installation of large metal‑tent terminals in the airport’s parking area. These temporary structures, built with German technology and Venezuelan labour, are intended to allow passenger flights to resume later in the year. The runway 10L/28R and several taxiways remain closed for repairs, with the FAA extending the closure until 3 November 2026. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has announced an international alliance to support the recovery, and officials estimate that partial services could be restored within 10‑12 weeks. The resumption of cargo flights is seen as a critical step to re‑establish national logistics and reconnect Venezuela with global trade.
