La Guaira rescue efforts continue after devastating double earthquake
Rescue operations are continuing in Playa Grande, located in the Catia La Mar parish of La Guaira state, following a devastating double earthquake that struck the central coast of Venezuela. The seismic event, consisting of two consecutive tremors measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, had its epicenter off the coast of La Guaira.
The earthquakes caused the partial and total collapse of several residential blocks within the Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi complex, part of the Gran Misión Vivienda Venezuela (GMVV) project. The destruction has left behind massive piles of fractured concrete and twisted metal where hundreds of families previously resided.
Multidisciplinary technical teams are currently implementing international protocols for search and rescue in collapsed structures (BREC). These efforts involve the use of specialized canine units, fiber optic cameras for exploring confined spaces, and cutting and drilling tools. Operations are being conducted under strict safety measures due to ground instability and the ongoing risk of aftershocks.
