La Guaira survivors demand official earthquake casualty data
Survivors in the state of La Guaira (Vargas) are demanding that the Venezuelan government release updated official data regarding the number of deaths and missing persons following the devastating double earthquake on June 24, 2026.
Iván Cedeño, coordinator of the La Guaira Survivors Network, stated that the lack of official information is a major issue. He noted that current figures are outdated and that the actual number of fatalities, missing persons, collapsed buildings, and at-risk homes is likely much higher than reported. Cedeño called for an independent public registry containing names and identification details to allow for third-party validation.
Additionally, the network expressed concern over the absence of a clear reconstruction program. There has been no information regarding topographic or seismic studies, future construction plans, microzonification, or tsunami risk assessments. The group has requested meetings with Governor José Alejandro Terán, municipal authorities, and national ministers, but they have reportedly received no response. They are also calling for the repair of access roads and the removal of debris from coastal areas.
