La Guajira receives major infrastructure and social investment announcements

President Abelardo de la Espriella has announced a comprehensive investment and legislative agenda focused on the development of La Guajira and the broader Caribbean region. Key infrastructure commitments include approximately 7.5 billion pesos for water and sanitation projects in Uribia, Maicao, and Riohacha, alongside 22 billion pesos for drainage in Riohacha. In housing, 22 billion pesos are earmarked to complete 180 pending homes in Fonseca. To ensure energy stability, the government has allocated 1.5 trillion pesos to the utility provider Air-e.

Beyond infrastructure, the administration is addressing institutional and economic concerns. President De la Espriella has ordered an investigation into potential administrative irregularities at the Universidad de La Guajira, involving the university's rector. Additionally, the RAP Caribe, representing seven departments, has petitioned the Energy and Gas Regulation Commission (Creg) to review electricity tariffs, arguing that current formulas do not account for the specific climatic realities of the Caribbean coast.

Looking ahead, the government is preparing its first-year legislative agenda, which includes a proposed tax reform, a new National Development Plan, and updated security policies regarding illegal armed groups.
