La Guajira development projects focus on tourism and infrastructure

Several infrastructure and tourism initiatives are underway in La Guajira, Colombia, to bolster the regional economy. In Riohacha, Governor Jairo Aguilar Deluque is overseeing the construction of a new malecón, which is currently 70 percent complete and expected to open in December. Other projects include the recovery of the Teatro Aurora through tax-based works and the remodeling of the La Marina building.

In Hatonuevo, the mining company Cerrejón has donated a Hitachi EX3600 excavator to support the creation of the Parque de la Identidad Minera. This project, a collaboration between the Hatonuevo Mayor's Office, CHM Minería, and Cerrejón, aims to establish a mining tourism corridor connecting Hatonuevo, Albania, and Barrancas. The machinery is expected to be delivered in November 2026.

Separately, regional concerns have been raised regarding coastal erosion in La Guajira. Experts emphasize the need for technical studies, scientific knowledge, and coordinated action between the national government, local authorities, and environmental agencies to protect ecosystems, infrastructure, and the economic activities of coastal communities.
