La Guajira poverty and Venezuela consultation rescheduling

In Colombia, the region of La Guajira continues to face severe socio-economic challenges despite the discovery of new gas finds in the Copoazú-1 well and the Tayrona and Guajira Offshore 10 blocks. Recent data indicates a monetary poverty rate of 65.7% and extreme poverty of 43.2%. Rural areas suffer from low infrastructure coverage, with only 21% access to aqueducts and 33% to sewage systems. The region has also struggled with systemic corruption, affecting the implementation of health and education projects.

In Venezuela, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced that a national popular consultation has been rescheduled for October 11. The event, originally planned for July 12, was postponed due to seismic activity in June. The consultation aims to allow communal councils and condominium boards to propose and decide on local projects for direct resource allocation. Funds originally intended for the consultation are being redirected to assist families affected by the recent earthquakes.
