La Higuera municipal employees killed in Ruta 5 Norte collision
A fatal head-on collision between a private vehicle and a passenger bus occurred on Wednesday morning at Cuesta Buenos Aires on Ruta 5 Norte, in the Coquimbo Region.
Two employees of the La Higuera Municipality were killed in the accident. The victims have been identified as Rodrigo Garmendia, a kinesiologist from the Social Department, and Catalina Contreras, a lawyer from the municipal legal staff.
Two other individuals sustained injuries in the crash. They were initially treated at the Hospital de La Serena and later transferred to Clínica RedSalud Elqui, where medical director Víctor Silveira reported they are in stable condition without neurological complications.
Authorities, including the SIAT of Carabineros, have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the high-energy collision. The Service Médico Legal will conduct autopsies on the deceased.
