La Huatápera Indigenous Museum preserves Purépecha heritage

The La Huatápera Indigenous Museum in Uruapan, Michoacán, serves as a dedicated space for preserving and exhibiting the legacy of the Purépecha culture. Located in the city's historic center, the museum is housed in a significant colonial-era building that originally functioned as an indigenous hospital founded in 1533 by Fray Juan de San Miguel.

The museum features several exhibition rooms, including ‘Los Cuatro Pueblos’, which displays items related to the daily life, ceramics, and ceremonial pieces of the region's indigenous peoples. Other highlights include a section on ‘El Maque de Michoacán’, detailing traditional wood decoration techniques, and a historic chapel containing a 16th-century mural.
