Chile implements Plan Cancerbero to transfer high-risk inmates to Talca

Chilean authorities are executing 'Plan Cancerbero,' a strategic initiative to relocate high-risk inmates and alleviate prison overcrowding. A major component of this plan involves the progressive population of the new La Laguna Penitentiary Complex in Talca, which features advanced security technology and a capacity for 2,320 inmates. Recent operations have successfully transferred hundreds of prisoners from various regional facilities to the new complex.

The deployment has sparked political debate. Franco Parisi, leader of the Partido de la Gente (PDG), expressed support for the security objectives but rejected the government's proposal for a constitutional reform to implement the plan, suggesting instead the use of Supreme Decree 518. Additionally, local authorities in the Maule Region have called for enhanced security measures for communities surrounding the new Talca facility to mitigate potential risks associated with the presence of high-danger inmates.

In a separate incident in the Los Lagos Region, five individuals remain in custody following the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old in Frutillar during a fight. Meanwhile, nationwide raids in the Araucanía Region resulted in the seizure of weapons and drugs in several penitentiaries as part of a broader prison strengthening plan.
