Milei faces re‑election challenge as Macri candidacy looms and Tucumán election date set
A national poll by Isasi‑Burdman conducted in July 2026 found that a potential presidential candidacy by former president Mauricio Macri would cut La Libertad Avanza’s support for Javier Milei from 39 % to 35 %, a loss of four points that could force Milei into a runoff. In that scenario Macri would obtain roughly 10 % of the vote, while the incumbent’s image rating was reported at 43 % positive and 44 % negative.
Governor Osvaldo Jaldo of Tucumán signed a decree fixing the provincial election for 9 May 2027, making the province the first to hold its ballot separately from the national October elections. The decision intensifies the contest between the provincial Peronist bloc and the Milei government.
La Libertad Avanza’s regional leader in Chaco, Alfredo Capi Rodríguez, called for the abolition of the “desdoblamiento” system that forces voters to go to the polls on multiple dates, proposing a single election day nationwide. The national government, while prioritising economic reforms, has placed the broader electoral reform – including the proposed elimination of the PASO primaries – on the backburner after the bill was sent to Congress more than three months ago.
Senator Bartolomé Abdala of San Luis denied any electoral agreement with Governor Claudio Poggi for the 2027 races, reiterating that La Libertad Avanza’s sole goal is Milei’s re‑election.
