Javier Milei confirms 2027 re-election bid and defends economic record FAST-MOVING

President Javier Milei has confirmed his intention to run for re-election in 2027, framing the upcoming political contest as a choice between 'progress' and 'decadence.' Defending his administration's economic performance, Milei argued that the country is in a significantly better position than when he took office, citing a drop in poverty from 57% to 30% and claiming that consumption and GDP are at historic highs. He criticized journalists and analysts for what he termed 'intellectual dishonesty' regarding economic indicators.

Politically, the ruling La Libertad Avanza party is intensifying its territorial organization. The party is establishing provincial offices and leadership training schools to build a robust structure for the 2027 elections. However, the administration faces legislative challenges. In the Senate, the government is pushing for the approval of key judicial appointments for Pablo Yadarola and Pablo Bertuzzi. Meanwhile, provincial allies from Salta and Misiones have signaled they will no longer provide automatic support, opting instead to negotiate on a case-by-case basis.

Economically, the Monthly Economic Activity Estimator (EMAE) reported a 2.7% year-on-year growth in June, supported by sectors such as mining and agriculture. Despite these indicators, some officials, including Senate leader Patricia Bullrich, have noted that certain sectors are still experiencing significant economic hardship and have called for macroeconomic gains to reach households and SMEs more quickly.
