La Libertad Avanza pushes to abolish Buenos Aires provincial Senate

The libertarian coalition La Libertad Avanza, led by national deputy Sebastián Pareja, is advocating the elimination of the Senate of Buenos Aires Province. The proposal would turn the provincial legislature into a unicameral body composed only of deputies, arguing that the funds currently spent on the upper chamber – about $156 million in the 2026 budget – could be redirected to health, education and security.

Pareja frames the move as both a fiscal and symbolic reform, criticizing the provincial government’s “Kirchnerist” policies and the upcoming 2027 elections. The party positions the Senate’s removal as a key campaign pillar against Governor Axel Kicillof’s plan to expand both chambers, which would increase Senate seats from 46 to 50 and deputies from 92 to 100. La Libertad Avanza says the Senate no longer serves the province’s needs and that its abolition would prioritize essential public services.
