Dominican Republic health officials issue heat and dengue warnings

Health authorities in the Dominican Republic are issuing warnings regarding rising temperatures and disease trends. Public Health Minister Víctor Atallah has urged the population to prevent dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke by maintaining hydration, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and wearing light clothing. Special attention is advised for children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions.

Meteorological reports from Indomet indicate high temperatures and potential thunderstorms across several regions, including Santo Domingo and San Pedro de Macorís. The institute is also monitoring a low-pressure zone with a 20% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone.

Regarding infectious diseases, the Ministry of Public Health reports 245 confirmed dengue cases as of epidemiological week 31, a 34.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Despite this increase, authorities state the disease remains under control within the endemic corridor. Other epidemiological data shows 127 cases of malaria and 259 cases of leptospirosis, while infant mortality has seen a slight decrease compared to the previous year.
