Regional reports highlight community demands and public health challenges
In the Dominican Republic, residents affected by the Boca de los Ríos dam construction on the Guayubín River are demanding the fulfillment of agreements signed in March 2021. The community has called on President Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona to intervene regarding unpaid land compensation, promised housing, and necessary infrastructure works. Protesters have set a deadline of October 20, 2026, for a formal response from authorities and the Empresa de Generación Hidroeléctrica Dominicana (EGEHID).
In Venezuela, the Integrated Union of Health and Social Security Workers (Sitrasss) in Barinas has secured the allocation of a former military pavilion to serve as a health space for medical workers. Following discussions with health authorities, the union also requested improved medical supplies and inclusion in surgical plans.
In Peru, health authorities in La Libertad have issued an urgent call for citizens to allow health brigades into their homes to combat dengue. Officials reported that approximately 44% of inspected homes tested positive for the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector.
In Mexico, regional government officials in Coahuila have requested federal intervention to address critical deficiencies within the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Reports from Piedras Negras indicate shortages of medication, a lack of specialist doctors, and prolonged wait times for appointments.
