La Libertad political tensions rise over null vote promotion
Political tensions are rising in La Libertad following statements regarding the upcoming regional elections. Aldo Mariños, a candidate for the Regional Government representing Somos Perú, has criticized former Trujillo mayor Arturo Fernández for his decision to promote null or void voting in the second round.
Mariños argued that such calls favor external political interests and suggested they are part of agreements intended to prevent the renewal of regional authorities. During his remarks, Mariños made a controversial gesture with a belt while warning those promoting the null vote.
Fernández has stated he will not support any of the two candidates competing in the second round—Aldo Mariños and Elías Rodríguez—claiming neither represents his political views. The regional second round is scheduled for December 6, 2026.
