La Libertad regional government headquarters construction halted due to extortion

Construction of the new La Libertad Regional Government headquarters in Trujillo has been temporarily suspended following an extortion attempt and the discovery of an explosive device.

During the early hours of September 27, authorities found an object with characteristics of an explosive and an extortion letter at the construction site located on Los Brillantes Street. The message, attributed to the criminal organization ‘Los Pulpos’, demanded a payment of S/ 500,000 within 24 hours from the regional managers and engineers in charge of the project, threatening an attack if the demand was not met.

The project, which involves building a 22-story tower, represents an investment exceeding S/ 170 million. Work has been halted as a security measure to protect workers and personnel while specialized units, including UDEX and the Divincri Extortion Unit, conduct investigations and reinforce site security.
