La Maddalena Archipelago faces environmental crisis from tourism

Authorities in the La Maddalena Archipelago are raising alarms regarding unsustainable levels of human pressure caused by summer tourism. The National Park and the regional government have reported that over 6,000 recreational boats enter the protected waters daily, targeting sensitive areas such as Caprera, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria, and Mortorio.

This influx has led to significant environmental degradation. Anchors are destroying essential Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, which are vital for water clarity and beach ecosystems. Additionally, excessive wave motion from boat traffic is accelerating erosion and threatening marine mammals in the Pelagos Sanctuary and local populations of Pinna nobilis.

Park Director Yuri Donno noted that Italian marine protected areas face a systemic issue where sanctions are too low to deter misconduct and enforcement is difficult. Park President Rosanna Giudice has called for a drastic change in approach, citing the need to amend national framework laws to grant park personnel greater judicial police authority to better manage the area.
