La Maddalena archipelago wildfire sparks debate over fire prevention

A recent wildfire on the island of Santa Maria, located within the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, has prompted calls for a review of regional fire prevention and emergency response systems. While the fire resulted in no injuries, the incident has raised questions regarding the adequacy of local resources.

National Deputy Dario Giagoni has called for the regional government to address gaps in preparedness, specifically questioning the absence of planned watchpoints, the lack of immediate Forestas teams, and the unavailability of certain aerial support, such as the Super Puma helicopter from Alà dei Sardi. He emphasized that the changing climate necessitates a more robust and permanent aerial presence in Sardinia.

The National Park administration has expressed gratitude to the firefighters, civil protection, and law enforcement agencies for their coordinated efforts in containing the flames. Park Director Yuri Donno and local officials were noted for their direct involvement in monitoring the situation on the ground. Following the containment of the fire, the agency Forestas has begun land reclamation efforts in the affected areas.
