The 2026 grape harvest in the La Mancha Denomination of Origin is entering its final stages, marked by the collection of the Airén white variety. The campaign has been characterized by an unusually rapid start, with early white varieties such as Chardonnay, Moscatel, and Verdejo being harvested as early as late July.
Persistent heat throughout the season has influenced harvesting patterns, necessitating intensive daytime work and night shifts to protect the health of workers. Despite the accelerated timeline and high temperatures, the quality of the fruit remains high, with a healthy balance of acidity and Baumé degree. Carlos David Bonilla, President of the Denomination of Origin La Mancha, noted that the grapes are in excellent sanitary condition for wine production.
While final figures are still being compiled by the Regulatory Council, initial technical surveys suggest uneven yields across the region. Some areas in Ciudad Real, including Socuéllamos, Tomelloso, and Villarrobledo, may experience a harvest decrease of approximately 10% compared to the previous year. However, initial losses in early varieties have been partially offset by the resilience of the Airén variety.
