La Mancha wine region sees early, atypical 2026 harvest

The La Mancha Denomination of Origin is experiencing an atypically early and rapid grape harvest for 2026. High temperatures beginning in May have accelerated the ripening process, leading to an early harvest of white varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Moscatel, and Verdejo. The collection of Cencibel and Tempranillo is also significantly advanced, even in provinces like Cuenca where ripening typically occurs later.

While the harvest is progressing quickly, producers report a decrease in yields. Julián García, manager of Vinícola de Villarrobledo, noted that real yields are dropping once the grapes are harvested. Despite the lower production caused by summer heatwaves, the quality of the fruit remains high. Julia Mercedes, president of Vinícola del Carmen, stated that winter rains provided enough reserves to ensure fruit quality despite a dry spring.

In Socuéllamos, the eleventh edition of the Patio del Vino is currently underway as part of the Manchavino 2026 fair. The event features seventeen local wineries from the La Mancha Denomination of Origin and has reached record attendance levels.
