La Morita Wastewater Treatment Plant undergoes modernization in Tijuana

The La Morita Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tijuana is undergoing a significant modernization and expansion project to improve sanitation and water reuse capabilities. The rehabilitation work has reached 93 percent completion, with an investment of approximately 94.4 million pesos sourced from federal programs PROSANEAR and PRODDER. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to benefit over 124,000 residents in the eastern zone of Tijuana by preventing drainage collapses and reducing environmental contamination risks.

Technological improvements include the installation of sludge thickeners and specialized equipment to optimize organic waste dehydration, which will help reduce odors. The project also aims to meet stricter environmental standards for the shared ecosystem between Tijuana and San Diego County.

In addition to sanitation, the facility hosts an experimental vineyard initiated in 2015 to demonstrate the viability of using treated water for viticulture, a critical study given the water stress in Baja California. The project, supported by enologist Camilo Magoni, seeks to prove that treated water can be successfully utilized for productive agricultural activities.
