La Palma Cabildo supports local indigenous cattle meat market
The Cabildo of La Palma has endorsed an initiative by the Association of Breeders of Palmera Breed Cattle (AVAPAL) to return indigenous cattle meat to the local market. The project aims to connect local producers directly with consumers, providing new economic opportunities for the livestock sector and preserving regional identity.
Insular President Sergio Rodríguez emphasized that the survival of these breeds depends on the profitability of the breeders' work. Agriculture Councilor Alberto Paz added that ensuring the commercial viability of indigenous breeds is essential for the continuity of traditional livestock farming on the island.
The initiative has already exceeded its initial targets; while the goal was to commercialize meat from two animals by the end of 2026, the project has already reached five animals. Currently, the meat is available to consumers at the El Llanito butcher shop.
