La Palma recovers electricity after island-wide blackout

The island of La Palma has fully restored its electrical supply following a total system failure, known as a “cero energético,” that occurred on Monday, November 2. The blackout, which began around 06:38, affected approximately 50,508 customers across the entire island.

The outage coincided with severe weather, including heavy rainfall and electrical storms. The incident was preceded by a failure in the Guinchos-Valle 66 kV high-voltage line, the island’s sole transport line, which had experienced issues earlier in the morning. The subsequent total collapse of the grid prompted the Government of the Canary Islands to activate the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection (PLATECA).

Authorities, including Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, reported no personal injuries, though heavy rains caused localized flooding and water accumulation. Essential services, such as hospitals, remained operational using backup power. Electricity companies Endesa and Red Eléctrica de España coordinated the progressive restoration of service, which was completed within approximately four to five hours.
