Chile activates emergency committees amid severe weather front

Chile’s Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) created an Emergency Committee together with Sernapesca and the Navy to monitor the impact of an intense weather front on artisanal fisheries and coastal caletas. The committee will suspend fishing in high‑risk zones, protect vessels and port infrastructure, and issue real‑time alerts. Subsecretary Osvaldo Urrutia, Navy commander Fernando Gallegos and Sernapesca director María Soledad Tapia emphasized the priority of safeguarding lives and assets.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Mining Daniel Mas convened major mining firms and industry bodies in a virtual meeting to review contingency plans, coordinate resources and monitor landslide risks in mining regions. Sernageomin reinforced its geological monitoring and urged companies to activate emergency protocols.

The municipality of El Carmen held a Cogrid communal meeting with local police, fire services and the hospital to coordinate response actions, advise residents on road clearance, and provide emergency contact numbers. Officials called for community cooperation and precautionary measures as the front continues to affect large parts of the country.
