La Palma hosts inauguration of four major LST telescopes

The international scientific community has inaugurated the Large-Sized Telescope (LST) subarray at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, Canary Islands. This subsystem is a critical component of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), which aims to become the world’s largest and most sensitive observatory for gamma-ray astronomy.

The four newly operational telescopes each feature a 23-meter diameter primary mirror and ultra-fast cameras. They are designed to detect Cherenkov light flashes produced when high-energy gamma rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere. This capability allows researchers to study cosmic phenomena ranging from 20 GeV to several TeV, including supermassive black holes, neutron stars, and the nature of dark matter.

The project represents over 15 years of international collaboration involving institutions from multiple countries. Notable contributors include the Max Planck Institute for Physics, the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), and the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). Czech researchers from Palacký University Olomouc and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic also played a significant role, specifically in the development and installation of the optical systems.
