La Palma launches door-to-door forest fire prevention campaign
The Cabildo de La Palma has launched a door-to-door environmental communication campaign to enhance forest fire prevention. Running through July and August, the initiative is part of the 2026 Forest Fire Prevention Environmental Communication program, operating under the slogan ‘Sin Maleza, Salvas tu Casa’ (Without Undergrowth, You Save Your Home).
Field personnel from the Environmental Education Unit are visiting homes near High Fire Risk Zones (ZARI) to provide personalized safety advice. Key recommendations for residents include keeping surroundings free of undergrowth, maintaining adequate distance between trees and buildings, and pruning tree canopies to a height of three meters. Residents are also urged to remove waste, firewood, and gas canisters from near facades and terraces, and to keep gardens hydrated within a 15-meter radius to help slow fire advancement.
The campaign responds to the island's history of significant wildfires. Since 2000, major fires in La Palma have burned over 15,000 hectares. Notably, the 2016 Jedey or Cumbre Vieja fire was the most devastating of the century for the island, destroying approximately 4,800 hectares.
