La Palma plans student residence in Tenerife to aid local students
The Cabildo de La Palma has launched steps to establish a student residence in Tenerife to support young people from La Palma who move to the island for university or vocational training. The project is expected to be located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
During a meeting with the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Cabildo, Sergio Rodríguez, discussed the initiative. The plan is supported by a recent amendment to the Ley de Cabildos, which allows island governments to develop infrastructure outside their own territory if it serves their residents.
The Cabildo is currently working to secure an agreement with the Canary Islands government for the necessary land. Once land is secured, the technical execution project will be commissioned immediately. The goal is to provide safe, affordable housing and mitigate the high costs of the private rental market for local families.
A second phase of the initiative involves expanding the model to Gran Canaria to serve students attending the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and other local training centers.
