La Palma volcanic eruption linked to long-term respiratory issues

The ASHES project (Analysis of Exposure and Respiratory Health Effects of Volcanic Eruption in the Canary Islands) has released findings linking the 2021 Tajogaite volcanic eruption in La Palma to persistent respiratory issues five years later. Led by researchers from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) and supported by the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), the study monitored approximately 1,000 participants, including adults and children.

Results indicate a dose-response relationship: higher levels of exposure to volcanic ash correlate with increased respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. Among the most exposed individuals, there was a three-fold increase in the probability of coughing and a doubling of alterations consistent with obstructive pulmonary patterns. In some cases, these respiratory alterations may be irreversible. The study emphasizes the need for continued monitoring, particularly for children and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
