La Pampa creates unit to manage El Niño risks through 2026‑27

The government of Argentina's La Pampa province has established a permanent Unidad de Gestión de Contingencias Hidrometeorológicas to coordinate provincial agencies, municipalities, producers and neighboring provinces in anticipation of a strong El Niño event expected by the end of 2026 and early 2027. The unit will work with the Federal Investment Council and the Inter‑American Institute for Disaster Reduction to develop protocols, tools and resources for risk prevention, preparation and response.

Experts from INTA Corrientes warn there is an 80 % chance the phenomenon will intensify, urging the agricultural sector to adopt anticipatory measures such as mapping flood‑prone areas, adjusting production schedules, continuously monitoring precipitation and soil conditions, and preserving vegetation cover to improve water infiltration and reduce erosion. They stress that using geospatial data and climate forecasts can help mitigate economic losses for farms and livestock operations.
