Authorities identify Mercado Meraz as the second-in-command of the criminal organization ‘Los Mezcales’, also referred to as the ‘Cártel Independiente de Colima’.

The arrest occurred on August 21 in a private residential complex in the Ejido Guadalupe Victoria area, north of Oaxaca City. Intelligence reports link Mercado Meraz to significant violence in the state of Colima, including various homicides, extortion, and drug trafficking. The criminal group is noted for its presence in several Colima municipalities, including Colima capital, Villa de Álvarez, Tecomán, Armería, and Manzanillo, and is reportedly involved in territorial disputes with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
