La Paz blockades trigger fuel, food shortages and 90‑day health emergency

After more than 40 days of road blockades organized by the Central Obrera Boliviana, the Tupac Katari peasant federation and other groups, La Paz and surrounding regions in Bolivia face severe shortages of gasoline, food, cash and medical supplies, including oxygen. The Administradora Boliviana de Carreteras reports about 90 blockage points across six departments, halting inter‑departmental transport and crippling the supply chain for essential goods.

On June 2 the La Paz department declared a 90‑day humanitarian and health state of emergency as hospitals struggle to operate with limited resources. President Rodrigo Paz signed legislation authorising the army to clear blockades and enforce emergency measures. The situation has prompted several governments to advise against non‑essential travel to La Paz, noting that roadblocks now extend to the highway serving El Alto International Airport, complicating both air and overland travel.
