La Plata Cathedral named most beautiful cathedral in world poll
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of La Plata has been named the most beautiful cathedral in the world through a digital competition called the ‘Mundial de Catedrales’. The contest, organized via the Instagram account @documentales_de_bolsillo, relied on popular voting from thousands of users.
In the final round, the Argentine neogothic temple secured 93% of the votes, defeating the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy. Throughout the tournament, the La Plata cathedral eliminated several iconic European landmarks, including Notre Dame de Paris, the Duomo of Milan, and Cologne Cathedral.
Designed by architect Pedro Benoit, the cathedral began construction in 1884 and was inaugurated in 1932. It is notable for its two 112-meter towers and its distinctive use of exposed brick, a departure from the stone facades common in many European cathedrals. The victory has highlighted the architectural significance of the site in Argentina and Latin America.
