La Plata Cathedral wins virtual World Cathedral Championship

The Cathedral of La Plata (Inmaculada Concepción) has been crowned champion of the ‘Mundial de Catedrales’, a virtual competition held on Instagram. The contest, organized by the account @documentales_de_bolsillo, drew over 54,000 users to vote for their favorite religious landmarks.

In the final round, the Argentine neogothic temple defeated the Florence Cathedral, securing 93% of the vote compared to 7% for its rival. During the tournament, the La Plata cathedral also eliminated other major landmarks, including Notre-Dame de Paris, the Duomo di Milano, and Cologne Cathedral.

Constructed between 1884 and 1932, the 112-meter-tall cathedral is a National Historic Monument in Argentina and serves as a major architectural and religious symbol for the city of La Plata.
