La Plata municipal works spark local controversy
The Municipality of La Plata has inaugurated the renovated Plaza España at the intersection of 7 and 66. The project included landscaping improvements, urban equipment upgrades, and a new design for the green space. The renovation followed a controversy regarding the plaza's historic monument; after opposition from the Spanish community, the monument was restored and will remain in place. To enhance security, the city introduced ‘Manolito’, an electric vehicle decorated with Argentine and Spanish flags, to patrol the area.
Separately, municipal authorities proceeded with the dismantling of a long-standing gastronomic stall in Parque Saavedra. The operator, Silvia Inés Bracamonte, who has worked at the location for nearly three decades, has threatened to chain herself to the site in protest. The removal occurred after a judicial injunction expired, though legal representatives for the merchant claim a request for an extension is still pending resolution. The municipality maintains that the concession for the stall had expired and no legal impediments remained to justify the operation.
